About the Institution

“When it comes to the environment and agriculture, it must never be a question of one or the other” – this quote by Cem Özdemir is the guiding principle for the policies of the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL).

The BMEL’s aim is to strengthen agro-ecological, climate-friendly, local, just and participatory food production around the globe, and to contribute towards achieving the realisation of the right to food and implementing the 2030 Agenda, the Paris Climate Agreement and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. The BMEL contributes its food and agricultural expertise within the scope of its project work in international climate and food partnerships and through its responsibilities regarding the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). The BMEL is the host of the annual Global Forum for Food and Agriculture (GFFA).

Project Description

The realisation of the right to food is one of the BMEL’s main ambitions. At the 2024 Innovation Forum, we are exhibiting partnerships focused on SDG17, through which we aim to contribute to the 2030 Agenda. Our stand will provide opportunities for making contacts and networking and will present projects from our Bilateral Cooperation Programme, the International Research Cooperation on Global Food Security and the Bilateral Trust Fund in collaboration with the FAO.

  • The Bilateral Cooperation Programme projects will include the Agriculture Policy Dialogues with Ukraine, Moldova, Kazakhstan, Brazil, China and the African Union.
  • The Committee on World Food Security (CFS) will show how we aim to globally advance and implement human rights-based approaches in a new project launched under the Bilateral Trust Fund with the FAO.
  • On research, we will discuss the availability of fruit and vegetables. The BMEL “Fruits and vegetables for all seasons” project at the Georg-August University of Göttingen focuses on the resource-efficient processing of fruit and vegetables as well as on new market opportunities as tools to promote rural development in sub-Saharan Africa.

We look forward to this exchange and to new ideas to jointly shape the transformation.

Key Topic

In the year of the 20th anniversary of the Voluntary Guidelines on the Implementation of the Right to Food, we are focusing on the question of how we can jointly realise this fundamental human right through international cooperation.
