Sovereign, resilient, sustainable. Global food supply and agricultural production of the future on the Eurasian continent

German Agribusiness Alliance (GAA)
Leibniz Institute of Agricultural Development in Transition Economies (IAMO)

Pandemic, climate crisis, port blockades: predictability in agricultural production – and thus global food security – is of utmost importance in light of persistent global crises. Countries with great agricultural potential have a responsibility to continue to produce reliably in the future and to ensure the food supply of their own population while at the same time closing international supply gaps with exports. Solutions that support farmers in producing in an environmentally and economically sustainable way, especially in times of climate change, are becoming increasingly important. Modern data models, for instance, are able to simulate the effect of climate change on yields with the help of different scenarios and thus to support well-founded strategic cultivation decisions. The following issues are of key importance in these times of ever-changing and perpetuating crises:

  • How can national economies shape their farming sectors in such a way that they can produce sustainably and as independently as possible from external factors?
  • Which agricultural policy measures promise lasting success?
  • Which production concepts reduce the vulnerability to crises, and where would exchange make sense?
  • How could international cooperation look like that promotes sovereign agricultural production while at the same time ensuring that farmers benefit?

We will discuss these questions in a panel discussion on the example of the Eastern European/Central Asian region.
