The 2018 Global Forum for Food and Agriculture will debate „Agriculture Goes Digital – Smart Solutions for Future Farming”. Therefore, Brazil and France propose a joint panel to debate “how can digital agriculture foster ressource efficient and environmentally-friendly food production”.
The GFFA will focus on how the international society will face the challenge of efficienctly and sustainably feeding 9.7 billion people by 2050. In this context, agricultural and food systems must improve through advanced digital technologies crop productivity while relying on sustainable crop protection and increasing resources use efficiency of water and nutrients.
France and Brazil have key roles as major providers of agriculture products and solutions. France is the European Union’s largest producer and its second largest exporter as well as world’s 8th largest producer and 4th largest agricultural exporter. Meanwhile, Brazil is the 3rd largest agricultural exporter and fourth for food products with a key role among emerging countries. It is crucial for both countries to improve the production and competitiveness with sustainability through digital innovation.
Brazil wants to present its measures and scientific achievements to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and accelerate its path to a low-carbon economy improving food production with resilience to climate change. Therefore, Brazilian research institutions, universities, NGOs and the private sector converge their efforts in order to achieve an increasingly sustainable productivity with modern tropical agricultural systems, environmental preservation and digital technologies.
France wants to lead the transition to non-toxic crop protection to avoid detrimental environmental impacts on human health and biodiversity. France therfore paves the way of a paradigm shift of how high yields can emerge from the managements of more complex and diverse crop management techniques made possible by digital agriculture. Supported by significant governemental investments, research and academical institutes join forces with the profession and the private sector to shape the agriculture for a sustainable and resilient crop production.
The resulting scientific production, extending the boundaries of knowledge, has generated several enabling technologies that allow the delivery of disruptive digital solutions, offering new opportunities for innovation that increase operational efficiency and profitability, while addressing the global need of sustainability, food safety and food security.
