When: 17 January 2019, from 12:30 pm to 1:45 pm
The GFFA Workshop “Sustainable livestock goes digital”, will link the results of the GFFA 2018 (“Shaping the future of livestock – sustainably, responsibly, efficiently”) with the topic of the GFFA 2019 “Agriculture Goes Digital – Smart Solutions for Future Farming” and analyse how GFFA 2019 can build on last year’s work. The ministerial communiqué issued at GFFA 2018 included a request for FAO, OIE, ILRI and GASL to work together and report back, hence our joint organization of this short event, which uses the four themes highlighted at GFFA 2018 as the organizing framework: Food and nutrition security, animal health and welfare, livelihoods and economic growth, climate and natural resource use.
The workshop will begin with a keynote presentation, followed by three short panel interventions and a plenary discussion, along with interventions from representatives of the young farmers.
• To meet the future demand for animal-based food to feed the growing human world population, all livestock systems have to become more sustainable and more efficient. Digital technologies will be important tools to achieve these goals.
• The Sustainable Development Goals of the UN Agenda 2030 (the SDGs) are the accepted reference frame for the sustainable development of the livestock sector. For all stakeholders, issues related to food security and nutrition; to livelihoods and economic growth; to animal health and animal welfare, and to climate and natural resources are in the focus.
• To meet the present and the future challenges in the livestock sector, a coordinated approach among all stakeholders will be key. The Global Agenda for Sustainable Livestock offers an ideal platform for multistakeholder action.
