Follow Up GFFA 2020: Food for All! Trade for a Secure, Diverse and Sustainable Nutrition

Summary:
How can international agricultural trade contribute to improving global food security? How can improved access to technology foster agricultural development? What can be done to make food value chains inclusive, sustainable, and secure? How can we strengthen a fair international regulatory system for agricultural trade?

These were the questions addressed at GFFA 2020, where agriculture ministers from 71 countries agreed on a communiqué that provides answers to these questions and calls for action. At the side event, the panellists will discuss with WTO Deputy Director-General Jean-Marie Paugam what progress has already been made since then.”

Moderator

Jean-Marie Paugam Deputy Director-General, World Trade Organisation

Ambassador Jean-Marie Paugam (France) has held senior management positions in the French Government on trade, most recently as Permanent Representative of France to the WTO. He has also held a number of senior positions in the French Ministry of Economy and Finance, including as a member of the Executive Committee of the French Treasury. He has also served as Deputy Executive Director of the International Trade Centre in Geneva. He has accumulated a deep and practical knowledge of government practices on trade as well as being familiar with high-level dialogues on trade and international economic operations. He has published a number of articles on trade-related issues, in particular when serving as Senior Research Fellow on International Trade at the French Institute for International Relations (IFPRI). Ambassador Paugam graduated from ENA in Paris and obtained degrees in Political Science from the Institute of Political Science in Aix-en-Provence and in Law from the Faculty of Law Aix-Marseille III.

Janusz Wojciechowski European Commissioner for Agriculture

Commissioner Wojciechowski grew up on a farm in Rawa Mazowiecka, a rural community in the Łódzkie region in central Poland. He holds a Master’s degree in law, having graduated from the University of Łódź Department of Law and Administration. His professional career as a judge spanned different levels up to membership of the Supreme Court of Poland. From 1995 to 2001 he held the important post of President of the Polish Supreme Audit Office.

From 2001 to 2004, he represented the Łódzkie constituency as a Member and also Vice-Marshal of the Parliament of the Republic of Poland – the Sejm. From June 2004 until May 2016, he served three terms as a Member of the European Parliament. He sat as a Member of the European Parliament’s Intergroup on the Welfare and Conservation of Animals from his first term and from 2014 to 2016 he was President of the Intergroup.

From May 2016 to November 2019, he was a Member of the European Court of Auditors.

Commissioner Wojciechowski has been the author and co-author of five comments on the Polish Penal Code, as well as the author of more than 100 articles and publications on criminal law in various Polish legal magazines. He also writes on socio-legal issues.

Hon. Reuben Mtolo Phiri Minister for Agriculture from Zambia

Honorable Reuben Phiri  Mtolo , MP is a member of Parliament for Chipata Central Constituency of Eastern Province. He is a member of parliament under the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND). He was first elected as a member of parliament in 2011 under the Movement for Multiparty. Democracy (MMD). He is an economist by profession with massive experience in the agriculture sector. Before joining politics he worked in various agricultural organizations which include the Food Reserve Agency(FRA) and the Eastern Province Cooperative Union (ECU), among others. He is also engaged in farming.
He is a dedicated and target oriented person who loves his work. He likes athletics, badminton, soccer, table tennis and traveling during recreation times.
