Global population growth and greater prosperity are leading to a disproportionate rise in the consumption of food of animal origin all over the world. Production needs to be raised significantly in order to meet increased demand. It can also be assumed that trade with products of livestock husbandry will intensify considerably. At the same time, increased demands are being placed on environmentally friendly and climate-smart livestock production. Furthermore, consumers have more exacting demands regarding animal welfareoriented husbandry conditions. Risks to animal health require strengthened international cooperation.
Responses to these challenges will essentially determine the future of livestock husbandry, including its role as an important economic factor in many rural regions.
The GFFA offers the chance to develop a better understanding for the challenges and opportunities of livestock production on the basis of international dialogue between politics, science, industry and civil society. In addition to this, we intend to identify potential solutions that are facilitated by intensified international cooperation. The development of the livestock sector has a special importance also with regard to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) under the United Nations 2030 Agenda, in particular SDG 2 “End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture”. We aim for our debate during the GFFA to make a contribution to meeting this goal. In addition, we want to promote understanding at international level for animal welfare oriented husbandry methods that meet the requirements of sustainability, climate stewardship and economic efficiency likewise.
The debate at the GFFA 2018 will focus on the following key issues:
→ Global market development with consideration of dietary and consumer trends
→ Significance of livestock husbandry for food and nutrition security and as an economic factor in rural areas
→ Questions of sustainable production (site-appropriate production and feedstuff supply, climate stewardship and sustainable stewardship of the resources soil and water, increase of animal health and animal welfare)
The many events carried out under GFFA 2018 are intended to provide impetus for future developments in the area of “Agriculture and Animal Production” at international level. The events include:
18 January 2018: Kick-off Event, Cooperation Market
19 January 2018: Expert panels, Cooperation Market and High-Level Panels
